The Urban Greening Company specialise in bringing soil, water and vegetation to our grey towns and cities, including unused roofs, walls and pavements. Our interventions create bio-diverse habitats and help to protect against flood and the urban heat island effect.
The Urban Greening Company was formed to provide an integrated urban green infrastructure planning, design, installation and maintenance service. We have brought together industry experts and a skilled and experienced workforce in order to achieve this.
Gary is a consultant ecologist with 35 years experience of urban nature conservation, environmental planning and ecological impact assessment in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. Projects have included the David Attenborough Building, Cambridge, the London Olympic Park Biodiversity Action Plan and the winning competition entry to convert a 24km long disused railway to a cycle path in Singapore. He specialises in green infrastructure, especially green roofs, living walls and rain gardens. He is a Chartered Environmentalist, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, Fellow of Leeds Sustainability Institute, Director of the Green Infrastructure Consultancy, thesis tutor at the Bartlett, UCL, author of The Water Sensitive City (Wiley 2016), Ecosystem Services Come to Town: Greening Cities by Working with Nature (Wiley 2012), Green Roofs and Facades (BRE Press 2006), contributor to Climate: Design (Oro Editions 2009) and co-author of Estuary Edges: Ecological Design Guidance (Thames Estuary Partnership/ Environment Agency 2008), UK Rain Garden Guide (Reset 2012) and Landscape and Urban Design for Bats (BCT 2012).
Scotscape are a corporate sponsor of the charity Buglife. We support them in their activities to sustain invertebrate life in the built environment. Currently we are researching the optimum plant combination to feature in our living walls to support bugs and bees in cities.
Scotscape are registered installers of the Jakob wire system. This is an alternative vertical greening system, to support climbing plants and offers great biodiversity benefits.
Green Zone Design consists of a dedicated and passionate design team led by designer Paul Hensey. They are specialists in design, horticulture and construction techniques.
Thrive uses gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people living with disabilities or ill health, or are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable. Using gardening as a safe and secure way to develop someone’s ability to mix socially and make friends, and to learn practical skills to help them be more independent is now a proven therapy. Gardening improves physical and mental health and could lead to volunteering with other organisations, qualifications in horticulture which people can do with us and ultimately a job. Scotscape provides a safe environment to support Thrive’s endeavours.
